Lambing Courses, half day experiences and lambing after-school clubs.

We have been busy over the last couple of weeks preparing for lambing. A lot of work goes in at this time of year even before the sheep start giving birth!  The last few days we have been building the pens in the sheds and gathering the first lot of sheep off the hills. We still have a few more days of hill gathering and prep work to go. We will keep a close eye on the mothers then lambing is planned to starting from the middle of April.

We have had such a positive response to our Lambing on Loch Lomond experiences. Along with our planned ‘Lambing After school club’ we have been asked to run full day courses and half day experiences. We are really passionate about education and we are very excited to be able to offer these to our programme this year.

***TICKETS ARE NOW LIVE***

The experience that will be available this year will be.

Full Day – Lambing Course

Come and experience life on a Scottish hill sheep farm at the busiest time of year…….Lambing time!

You will join the Lennox family, Bobby, Anne, Kay and Dougie (as seen on TV – BBC2 – “This Farming Life”), get hands-on learning through a typical farming day, experience all about the different aspects of lambing.

The informal, action packed day will include the theory of the full breeding cycle, caring for pregnant sheep, recognising labour, common problems and taking part in the everyday tasks at lambing time.

We have approximately 1500 ewes here at Shantron and you should experience at least one live birth during the day (but as with any animal, nothing can be guaranteed). If births do happen during the day, you will have the opportunity to get really hands-on.

This experience is suitable for complete beginners – no previous stock handling experience is required – with a keen interest into what really happens at lambing time. It is also an informative course for sheep keepers with smaller flocks and limited experience who are looking to learn more about lambing time.

There will also be plenty time in the day to handle young lambs, and feed any lambs that require hand feeding.

Included in your full day Lambing Course experience will be a home cooked farmhouse lunch cooked by Anne.

Spaces are limited with only 8 places available on each day, this ensures that you get the best hands on lambing experience possible as well as ensuring the well-being of the sheep.

Half Day – Lambing experience

Get hands on at Lambing time!

This is a wonderful opportunity to spend a few hours in our lambing shed. You

will be able to get involved and help Bobby in the sheds within a typical daily routine in the lambing shed. Feeding sheep, bedding the pens, feeding any lambs that require hand feeding, moving the mothers and their lambs to the fields, walking the fields to check on the sheep and monitoring the sheep.

During your time in the shed you will hopefully witness a live birth, we would love to guarantee this but for obvious reasons we can’t. There will however be plenty of time to handle young lambs and share in this rare opportunity to be up close and hand on with this half day experience.
